Pilgrimage
In 2003, Maeve Hickey accompanied members of the Tohono O'odham Nation of Native Americans from Arizona on their arduous walking pilgrimage across the border and through the Sonoran desert of northern Mexico. Photographing them as they walked, prayed, rested, and received blessings from their leader and sleeping under the stars with them in the course of their journey. The series culminates with the arrival of the pilgrims at the shrine of Saint Francis Xavier in Magdalena de Kino.
"The renowned Irish photographer has unveiled a glimpse of a long-standing Mexican tradition
Hickey's lucid and simple images capture the exhaustion, dedication and determination of the Tohono O'odham people..." Lana Martin, The Muse, St. John's, Newfoundland (9/23/04)
