Landscapes of Faith
This photographic project began as an exploration of the ancient and continuing, powerfully spiritual, interaction of people and place in Ireland. From the mossy stoneworks of pre-Christian and early Medieval ruins to the sites of more recent miraculous apparitions, Maeve Hickey's photographs reveal the mutual enchantment of the Irish and their landscapes in these places of pilgrimage and worship.
Several recent photographs for this series are featured below. The work will next turn to the very different "landscapes of faith" to be found on the European continent, from the shrines and saints of Malta to the the traditional pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, and the ever-growing cult of St.Padre Pio in Italy.
The project is part of larger funded project by NORFACE on pilgrimage and the re-emergence of religion as a social force in Europe.
